1400 - An ancient craft

For over 600 years, the Netherlands is known worldwide for its diamonds and jewelry. The Dutch have invented diamond polishing. Through the centuries, the world's largest diamenten familiar to the Dutch craftsmanship and virtuosity.

Perhaps the most famous diamond in the world, the Koh-i-noor. He has almost all the emperors, kings, maharajas, Shah and sheikhs from the West and East accessories.

Koh-i-noor means mountain of light, a huge diamond of high quality with a weight of 186 carats.

1586 - The diamond cutter

These craftsmen have the task of the facets so as to bring the best possible light from one facet to another is bounced. The knowledge of this demanding profession for centuries from generation to generation. The accuracy and finesse of grinding determine the brilliance of the diamond. The first recorded diamond cutter in 1586 was credited in the register of Amsterdam.

1737 - VOC

Brazil's rich diamond fields were discovered. The VOC was the only monopoly for the marketing of these large diamond inventories that was shipped to the Netherlands to grind and the whole world with brilliant cut diamond.

1805 - Industrial development

The character of the diamond processing changed under the influence of industrial development. In the early nineteenth century, the diamond industry housed in factories with many workers who worked on cutting tables continue driven by horses.

Meanwhile, many factories were built with major implications for the district with the nickname "Diamond District" and the surrounding streets were named for precious stones, also showed the many companies to build houses for the management and workers of the factories. These streets and buildings still exist and are national monuments.

1840 - Coster Diamonds

Een daarvan was een uitnodiging van de Engelse koningin Victoria om de bekende Koh-i-noor diamant opnieuw te slijpen. De schittering werd geaccentueerd met een nieuwe slijpvorm en werd geplaatst in de Engelse kroon.

1854 - Asscher Diamonds

Perhaps the most famous diamond processing company, Royal Asscher Diamond Company was founded in 1854.

The family business passed from father to son, among whom were some very talented diamond cutters. A private, octagonal milling was developed and marketed as Asscher Cut. This form was tight international demand. The company gained world fame by the absolute command of the English King Edward VII to the Cullinan diamond gorges.

The largest diamond ever found in South Africa, more than 3,106 carats. The Dutch company Asscher clave the Cullinan to 9 large and 96 small stones. The largest, over 530 carats, is the scepter of the British crown jewels. The other 104 diamonds are among the crown jewels of the British royal family.

The Oscar-winning Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor as a true connoisseur with her enormous diamond jewelry with large diamonds, had a ring with a 33 carat Asscher Cut diamond of exceptionally high quality.

1865 - Boas Diamonds

The brothers Israel, Marcus Hartog and Boas were successful diamond cutters and dealers. The highly polished diamonds were traded around the world.

In 1897 the doors were opened for the second Boas factory and was the world's largest steam-driven diamond factory in the world, still located at the New Uilenburgerstraat 173 in Amsterdam.

In 1898 10,000 weekly carat rough diamond cut some for a year when sales increased by 25 million guilders. The diamond-cutting factory had 800 employees, diamond worker earned before that time a high salary of 130 guilders a week.

1870 - Diamond centre of the world

A new golden age dawned in 1870 with the discovery of diamonds in the Dutch colony of South Africa and brought unprecedented prosperity to the diamond trade and Amsterdam grew into diamond center of the world that work enabled 12,000 diamond workers and 1000 men engaged in trade of diamonds.

1876 - Van Moppes Diamonds

The houses of Moppes headquarters in Amsterdam diamond processing factory, diamond and jewelery manufacturing and wholesale division. Furthermore, had Moppes wholesale offices around the world. New roads were also smashed as industrial diamonds, diamond tools and diamond polishing powder.

1890 - World's first diamond exchange

Amsterdam is home to the world's oldest diamond exchange, founded in 1890, on 17 September, the statutes approved by King William III.

The fair association for the diamond trade uses extremely high standards and has a knowledge and reliability arbitration. Membership is only for traders in diamonds after investigation and ballot.

1894 - Trade union

The General Dutch Diamond Editor Bond is founded in 1894. The house is located on the union Franschelaan in Amsterdam, designed by architect Berlage, serves as an example of community art. Today is the national trade union museum. Employers united in juweliersverenigingen.Van traditionally the diamond was transferred from father to son.

The diamond trade is very different from normal industries. The trade of diamond jewelry is not only capital intensive, but is also in good faith. You need to be introduced and the screening is strict. This ensures an internationally renowned diamond industry.

1907 - International co-operation

In 1907, at the initiative of the Amsterdam diamond trade show, international co-operation of all existing exchanges: The Federation of Diamond Bourses. Still the association represents the interests and ensure compliance with the strict rules that are designed to international trade in diamante to regulate and safeguard the interests of consumers.

Current there are only 29 diamond exchanges in the world.

1933 - Federation gold and silver

This organization was founded in 1933, is for entrepreneurs in gold, silver and gemstone industry in the Netherlands. The Federation represents the interests of professional and craft entrepreneurs working in industry, trade, wholesale and retail at national and international level.

The diamond information center of the federation supports the media with information through press releases and brings the television center, sites, radio, magazines and newspapers informed of new products and developments.

1960 - Investment

The most striking return of the purchase of a diamond is the daily pleasure of wearing and admiring a beautiful diamond. In addition, the increase in value of a diamond of interest.

1979 - Juweelco

1985 - NJU

In the Netherlands there are many organizations that strict quality monitoring within the Jewellery and diamond industry. Nowhere are these standards checked much.

The Dutch Jewelry and Watch Industry is the recognized association for Dutch jewelers. The NJU is active with information, training and a consumer disputes commission.

1989 - New diamond exchange

The Amsterdam office is the world's first exhibition, currently located in a new building.

The Association Scholarship for the diamond trade promotes the interests of the Netherlands members and oversees compliance with the strict rules which by its own stock exchange and cooperation with other international organizations are prepared to trade in diamonds to regulate and safeguards the interests of members and consumers.

2007 - Diamond museum

Tourists from all continents who are interested in diamonds and diamond jewelry to wonderful shopping, traveling over 400 years en masse to the Netherlands. The cultural cities of Amsterdam and The Hague have a high concentration of diamond and annually attract millions of tourists who are fond of diamond jewelry.

Since 2007 there is even a diamond museum in Amsterdam, which takes you on a journey of information. A fascinating story that you should not miss. Besides the permanent collection there is a temporary exhibition of famous diamonds, jewelry and crowns of the world and from all eras.

Present

The Netherlands still has a thriving diamond industry, diamond jewelry with exact proportions and immaculately finished, resulting in influx of tourists from around the world to the Netherlands in search of beautiful diamond jewelry.
